Collier Street United Church, Barrie, ON

Collier United Church is a Christian community that values connection, creativity, inclusion, love, diversity,  transformation, and hope.  Our downtown Church in Barrie, Ontario, seeks a Music Director to work in a team supporting the music life of the community.

The Music Director leads and administers the church’s music ministry with the Minister of Worship, Congregational Care and Leadership. The Music Director will be proficient with our pipe organ and grand piano and have experience with other musical instruments as the Music Director will effectively provide music accompaniment and lead, direct and accompany our church choirs during regular and special services and integrate a balance of modern/contemporary and traditional music and music technology into Collier’s worship life.

We desire that the person has:

- knowledge, experience and a developing understanding of the United Church worship tradition to appropriately select traditional and contemporary music in consultation with the minister

- technical ability to effectively play the organ, grand piano and other instruments (e.g. guitar, percussion)

- creative ability to teach as a choral director

- musical ability to instruct and lead adults, youth and children in music

- capability to execute church music functions accurately, efficiently, and effectively

- effective communication skills (written, verbal)

- capacity to work with minimal supervision

- a high degree of initiative and problem-solving skills

- respect and maintain confidentiality

- practical team player gifts who works respectfully and cooperatively

- coordinating skills to plan, organize and coordinate multiple activities

- a Police Records Check that includes the vulnerable sector that is satisfactory to Collier

- a willingness to support the vision and mission priorities of Collier

- a Bachelor of Music Degree (or equivalent) and a minimum of 5 years of music teaching/directing experience, preferably in a church environment


With an excellent opportunity to enrich the music program, we hope the person will:

  1. Plan and execute various music programs by playing and directing the group on church and secular music: weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, and seasonally.

  2. Seek feedback from program participants and church staff and evaluate the efficacy of programs offered, adjusting as needed to ensure maximum impact for the program and participants.

  3. Recruit, inspire, organize, and lead various activities for performers to participate in choir/retreats/camps and other opportunities for learning and performance.

Contract length: 12 months renewable contract

Part-time hours: 10 per week (3 days per week, inclusive of Sundays)

Salary: RCCO Recommended Rate plus 3 weeks' vacation
