Canada
has a rich heritage of organ building, with instruments dating back to
the early 19th century. Over time, such instruments may suffer from
decay, neglect or modernization, so they are no longer in their original
condition, and we can no longer hear their original sound.
In a
bid to acknowledge and publicize historic instruments across the
country, and prevent their loss, the RCCO instituted its Historic Organs
program. An instrument may qualify in one of three classes, depending
on its history and condition.
Qualifying
instruments will receive an official citation certificate, which may be
affixed to the organ case. The current list of designated Historic
Organs can be seen here.
