    ORGANIST/DIRECTOR OF MUSIC (3/4 time)

    Location:    Vancouver, BC
Start Date:    September 2025 (or earlier, if available)

    Application Deadline:    Open until filled

    POSITION OVERVIEW
St. Mary's Kerrisdale, a vibrant Anglican parish in Vancouver, seeks a 3/4-time Organist/Director of Music to lead and grow our diverse music ministry. This is a central liturgical leadership and pastoral role involving collaboration with clergy, staff, volunteer and professional musicians, and the broader community. The successful candidate will be rooted in Anglican liturgical tradition while also welcoming a variety of musical styles

We are open to flexible staffing possibilities, including a job share between Organist and Music Director.

CURRENT MUSIC PROGRAM & CAPACITY FOR GROWTH
St. Mary’s has a long history of offering multiple worship services, each with its own distinct liturgical style. Our volunteer choir is supported by paid section leads, allowing us to maintain a high standard of music. In recent years, we have offered Evensong or another seasonally appropriate liturgical or musical service at 4:00 p.m. on the first Sunday of the month, complementing our more intergenerational and casual Spirit Sunday service at 10am. Nestled in the heart of Surrey and the Lower Mainland, the congregation is vibrant and growing. The church celebrates 113 years of faithful ministry in November 2025 and is a designated heritage building. Director of Music and Organist – Position Description
    April 2025

    Overview of the Position

    • Position: Director of Music and Organist, St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, Ottawa
    • Hours: 20 hours per week; position includes benefits
    • Compensation: Based on RCCO guidelines and as negotiated
    • Reports to: Incumbent and Churchwardens
    • Start Date: August 2025

About St. Matthew’s Anglican Church, Ottawa

St. Matthew’s, The Anglican Church in the Glebe is situated between First and Glebe Avenues. This handsome stone structure, which opened in 1930, for many in the community continues to serve as a spiritual and social cornerstone. St. Matthew’s is a vibrant Christian community that welcomes everyone. A standard of excellent music-making has always been a part of St. Matthew’s history. The music program supports the life of the Parish of St. Matthew’s in its contribution to the worship experience.

    Music at St. Matthew’s

St. Matthew’s holds weekly worship services throughout the year with additional services during Advent-Christmas and Lent-Easter cycles. Music for this worship is anchored in the Anglican choral tradition of hymns and anthems, plus the exploration of new compositions.

St. Matthew’s choir is a group of 25 singers dedicated to the discipline of Anglican choral music. It is an auditioned ensemble of men and women, including four paid choral scholars. The adult choir performs from Labour Day to mid-June for weekly and special services.

There is also a children’s choir. They participate monthly in worship services with the adult choir.

The choirs are accompanied by an organ that has significant links back to a 21-stop pipe organ built in 1909 by Casavant Freres for the church’s first sanctuary. In 1957, the organ was rebuilt and more than doubled in size by the British firm of Hill, Norman and Beard, and included a nine-stop Positiv division. The organ was rebuilt a final time by Orgues Baumgarten and dedicated in June, 2002.

It is understood by the parish that large sections of the instrument are at the end of their life. To come on as Director of Music and Organist (henceforth identified as D of M) at this time is an exciting opportunity to assist in the refurbishment of the organ and to head up both the process of acquiring a used or new organ console and the fundraising opportunities to make this happen. There is also a Yamaha grand piano and two harpsicords

    Worship Services at St. Matthew’s

    Sunday 10:30 a.m. Holy Eucharist
St. Matthew’s offers a weekly choral Eucharist with a vested choir. The liturgy is drawn from the Book of Alternative Services including hymns from Common Praise. The choir chants the psalm each week using either plainsong or Anglican chant settings. Each week the choir presents a Gradual anthem plus an anthem after communion. St. Matthew’s music library houses a rich collection of anthems and motets ranging from Renaissance polyphony to modern-day compositions

    Choral Evensong
Choral Evensong is presented at 4:00 p.m. on the first Sunday of each month from October to June.

    Other Services
There is a said service in St. Matthew’s chapel each Sunday at 8:00 a.m. There is also a said Holy Eucharist on Thursdays at 10 a.m. in the chapel, drawing from the traditional language of the Book of Alternative Services.

    Funerals and Weddings
The D of M works with the Incumbent and families to plan weddings and funerals which are separately remunerated.

    Concerts and other Music Events
Concerts and other music events may be presented throughout the year at the discretion of the D of M in consultation with the Incumbent and the Corporation. Plans and budgets must be authorized by Corporation and the D of M will be compensated separately for the rehearsal and performance time required for such events.

The Position of Director of Music: Responsibilities

    Director of Music

The Oratorian Fathers and Brothers of St Philip Neri seek a musically accomplished and creative Director and Organist to inherit and expansively develop the liturgical music of a vibrant parish in Toronto’s west end.

On Sunday, the principal mass is sung in English at 11 am (preceded by two masses without music, in English at 8:30 and a traditional Latin mass at 9:30). The 11 am Mass is presently supported by a small, amateur parish choir which the successful applicant will aim to enrich with both new singers and a more ambitious repertoire.

The major feasts of the liturgical year are typically also celebrated solemnly in the same way as at 11 am on Sundays, and we likewise intend that under the new Director these too will become musically more substantial.

In addition, the successful applicant will be responsible for assisting in nurturing the musical culture of the staff and children of St Vincent de Paul Elementary School, which is situated adjacent to the church, and playing for monthly school Masses (the candidate is not required to hold an Ontario teaching credential). He or she will also have first refusal of playing for weddings and funerals, which will be paid separately.

The organ at St Vincent de Paul is Casavant op. 1462 (II/20), essentially unaltered since its installation in 1932. Benefiting from the generous and resonant acoustic of the church, this instrument nonetheless will require repair and cleaning in the coming years, and the successful applicant will have an important role in directing this project, in conjunction with ongoing repairs to the church and parish hall.

Remuneration will be commensurate with experience and RCCO guidelines. The Archdiocese of Toronto supplies a benefit package including three weeks of paid vacation, a group benefits plan (health, dental, life insurance, travel medical insurance, long term disability, and Employee and Family Assistance Program), and the opportunity to join the archdiocesan pension plan. Time commitment is approximately 20 hours per week, with more required during the major liturgical seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter.

We invite candidates to learn more about the Toronto Oratory, which by the invitation of the Archdiocese of Toronto has the care of St Vincent de Paul parish, by visiting our website at https://oratory-toronto.org and the parish page therein: https://oratory-toronto.org/st-vincent-de-paul-parish/ The parish also has an Instagram account here: https://www.instagram.com/svptoronto/

To apply, please submit the following:

    • •    A cover letter outlining your interest and experience.
    • •    A resume detailing your qualifications.
    • •    Contact details for three references.

Send applications via email to the pastor, Fr Daniel Utrecht, at dutrecht@yahoo.ca by April 30 2025. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for interview and audition by May 15 2025.
