Job Description:
Holy Trinity Cathedral in New Westminster, British Columbia, invites applications for the position of Part-Time Music Director. In this position you will be responsible for organizing and leading choir rehearsals, performances during regularly scheduled services, and other tasks as required. Although not mandatory ideally you are a member of the Christian faith and are familiar with Anglican liturgy, worship, and musical traditions. You have strong leadership skills but can work collaboratively with the choir, clergy, and members of the congregation. Musicianship included the ability to be proficient with playing the piano and pipe organ, although other instrumental skills are an asset. Additional work such as wedding, funerals, and extraordinary services will be remunerated based on consultation with the minister in advance of such events.
Salary & Hours:
This is a part-time continuous position of approximately 8-14 total hours a week including the principal Sunday service and an expectation of preparation time averaging 3-4 hours a week. The position salary will be within the range of $18,300 - $24,000 based on music experience and qualifications according to RCCO guidelines.
Core Responsibilities (Can be adjusted as needed)
- Provide leadership in a ministry of music which is sensitive to the Anglican tradition, goals and practices of the Parish and the changes of the liturgical season.
- Recruit, nurture, teach, and direct the choir, including one practice each week for 10 months a year.
- Play the organ/piano at regularly scheduled Sunday 10 am services and special services as follows:

- Ash Wednesday
- Maundy Thursday (if held at Holy Trinity Cathedral)
- Good Friday
- All Souls (November 2)
- Christmas Eve
- Selecting appropriate hymns and anthems for all regularly scheduled services.
- As available, provide music for occasional services, including weddings, funerals and church events held in the cathedral (right of first refusal).
- Have oversight of the parish music library and licensing and purchase choral and instrumental music, consulting with churchwardens within an annual budget to be approved by the vestry.
- In consultation with the Priest-in-Charge, arrange for organ/piano maintenance as needed.
Qualifications
- Proven ability as an organist and pianist, including experience accompanying congregational singing and choirs and working with professional and amateur musicians
- Ability to direct and encourage a volunteer choir.
- Formal music education is preferred, ideally with training consistent with the standards of the Royal Canadian College of Organists (RCCO).
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with the clergy and lay worship leaders.
- A commitment to the expression of Anglican faith.
