We are pleased to announce Amiel Elfert as the winner of the 2021 Lorna and Murray Holmes Scholarship! He will begin a Bachelor of Music (Organ) at the University of Victoria this September, studying with Donald Hunt and Mark McDonald. Congratulations, Amiel!
Available annually, the Lorna & Murray Holmes Scholarship was established in their memory. Lorna was organist and choir director at Eastminster United Church in Toronto for 25 years and then served as supply organist in various churches. She was active on the RCCO Toronto Centre executive, serving as Chair of the Centre, and as Secretary of the National Examinations Committee. She was a Life Member of the Toronto Centre and died in 2001 at the age of 88. Her husband Murray was bass soloist at Eastminster United Church (then Danforth United) and later at Deer Park United Church. He taught music at Cosburn Junior High School, and was a joint member of the RCCO with his wife. He died in 2008 at the age of 94. Lorna and Murray Holmes were the parents of Karen Holmes, who was National President of the RCCO from 1996 to 1998. The scholarship provides $1,000 to a student entering a program of organ or church music studies at a Canadian University. Preference will be given to students beginning undergraduate studies. Applicants must hold membership in the College. There is no formal application form, but a letter of application must be accompanied by proof of acceptance at a Canadian University, two letters of reference from people able to assess the candidate's suitability for the scholarship and a list of the applicant's academic and musical achievements and awards. Deadline for applications: April 30 each year. Lorna fut organiste et directrice de chœur à la Eastminster United Church de Toronto pendant 25 ans et a ensuite été organiste adjointe de plusieurs églises. Elle fut active à la direction du centre CRCO de Toronto, a occupé le poste de présidente du centre et de secrétaire du comité national aux examens. Elle fut membre à vie du centre Toronto et mourut en 2001 à l'âge de 88 ans. Son mari, Murray, fut basse soliste de la Eastminster United Church (alors Danforth United) puis à la Deer Park United Church. Il enseigna la musique à la Cosburn Junior High School et fut membre du CRCO avec sa femme. Il mourut en 2008 à l'âge de 94 ans. La bourse octroie $1,000 à un étudiant commençant un cursus d'orgue ou de musique d'église dans une université canadienne. Les candidats commençant leur premier cycle seront favorisés. Les candidats doivent être membres du collège. Il n'y a pas de formulaire de candidature formel, mais la lettre de candidature doit être accompagnée d'une preuve d'admission à une université canadienne, de deux lettres de recommandation de la part de personnes en mesure de juger de la pertinence de la candidature et d'une liste des résultats et récompenses académiques et musicales du candidat. Date limite de candidature : 30 avril de chaque année.
