Context: First Evangelical Lutheran Church – Toronto
First Lutheran is a small, lively downtown congregation with an active hybrid worshipping community (weekly average combined in-person/online attendance 35), a campus ministry program at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) and active adult education programs. The church is a historic building on the TMU campus. First Lutheran welcomes people regardless of race, age, ability, gender identity, sexual orientation, class or religion. In-Kloo-Siv Voices Gospel Choir is based at First Lutheran. MINT Music, the primary tenant offers private music instruction on a wide-range of instruments. The Downtown Hyderi Congregation (Muslim) holds weekly Jum’ah prayers in the basement.
First ELC has a historic two-manual Karn-Warren pipe organ with an AGO specification pedal board (and dedicated organ fund), a baby grand piano, an electric keyboard and a collection of percussion instruments. During the last two years, we began Sing@First!, a voluntary vocal ensemble to support congregational song. The importance of music was cited in our recent vision and mission exercise. The church musician will have use of the organ and piano for private organ lessons and rehearsal time.
